Dracula Book Report

Dracula is probably the most sold horror book ever. It has over 100 adaptations but the original is told through journal entries.
The author of the book is Bram Stoker. Bram has also written The Snake’s Lair, and The Lair of the White Worm.
The book takes place in Transylvania, and England.
The book begins when Jonathan Harker, a newly qualified English solicitor, finds out that a person named Count Dracula wants to buy a house in England, so Jonathan is sent to Transylvania to Dracula’s castle to go over papers with him.
When he gets there it was strange. While riding in the carriage, people kept on giving gifts to him to protect him.
He soon gets to Count Dracula’s castle and finds him very strange. Because when he accidently cuts himself, Dracula sucked the blood.
Soon, Jonathan finds out that he is prisoner to the castle, because all of the doors are locked.
Jonathan starts seeing Dracula climbing on the walls of the castle. He then sees these gypsies outside, putting Dracula in a crate and sending him off to a ship.
Jonathan then knew that he had to get out of the castle. He then goes out of his open window and climbs down the wall carefully and barely escapes.
Meanwhile, a Russian ship called The Demeter, is carrying Dracula without knowing it to where Jonathan’s fiancée Mina Harker is.
On the ship, everyone starts disappearing and presumed dead. Then it soon crashes on shore and everyone’s body is missing except for the Captain’s which is tied to the ship’s helm.
Soon, Dracula is tracking Harker’s fiancée, Wilhelmina “Mina” Murray, and her friend Lucy Westenra. Lucy receives 3 marriage proposals in one day from Dr. Jack Seward, Quincy Morris, and Arthur Holmwood.
She accepts Arthur’s proposal but the 3 of the guys remain friends.
Later one night, Mina was sleeping in the same room as Lucy and she wakes up and sees Lucy missing from her bed.
Mina then sees the door cracked open. She figures that Lucy must have gone for a walk outside.
Mina goes outside and from a distance, sees a person that is huge and white fangs above Lucy.
Mina stares in horror. The thing then disappears and Mina runs over to Lucy. She notices two bite marks on her throat.
After that, Lucy catches a really deadly fever.
Dr. Jack Seward comes over with his old teacher, Dr. Van Helsingr. Van Helsing suggests that they should give blood transfusions to her, but it didn’t work.
Arthur Holmwood and Quincy Morris come over to help. Van Helsing believes that something evil is giving her this fever. Van Helsing knows that garlic keeps the spirits away. So the 4 men leave, but Lucy’s mom is unaware of the importance of the garlic, so she clears out the garlic. Dracula then turns into wolf form and jumps through the window.
Lucy’s mom dies from fright. Lucy gets sicker and sicker, and soon dies.
Meanwhile, Mina gets a letter from nurses saying that they found Jonathan dazed and confused.
Mina goes to see Jonathan and he recognizes her but is still confused about what happened at Dracula’s castle. Mina then gets a letter that Lucy is dead.
Back where Lucy lives, there were reports about people getting attacked by what they call “a white woman”.
Van Helsing and Dr. Seward are curious about this. Van Helsing believes that it is Lucy herself!
Van Helsing explains to Seward that it is called “the undead”, he explains that it is when you are dead, but your soul is still alive inside you, evil. The way to release the soul, is to hit it through the heart with a jagger, and cutting off his head.
Van Helsing and Dr. Seward then check Lucy’s coffin and find that she is gone!
Van Helsing and Dr. Seward then wait behind a tree for Lucy’s body to walk back.
They then see this white figure floating and then it disappeared. Van Helsing and Seward then check her coffin again and they find that she is there.
The two then gather Arthur and Quincy to help release her soul. Van Helsing explains why.
He four men then check her coffin and find it empty! The four then wait hidden. They then see a white figure float and disappear.
The four then check her coffin and find her there, eyes closed. Arthur was the one who wanted to release her soul because he loved her. He then sticks the jabber through her heart and cuts off her head freeing her soul.
Van Helsing, Dr. Seward, Arthur, and Quincy then gather Jonathan and Mina to help kill the lead vampire, Dracula.
Van Helsing explains that in the 1400’s, Dracula became one of the undead.
They all then start to track Dracula and later learn that gypsies are taking him back to his castle.
The 6 of them chase after the gypsies holding Dracula in his crate. They then catch them in front of Dracula’s castle and start fighting. Quincy then gets stabbed in the stomach by one of the gypsies and gets injured.
Dracula then comes out of his coffin but Jonathan stabs him in the heart and injured Quincy cuts off his head freeing his soul.
And then in the last sentence, Quincy dies, leaving Van Helsing, Dr. Seward, Jonathan Harker, Mina Harker, and Arthur as the survivors.
My opinion of the book is that it’s amazing! It is the best vampire book I have ever read, and I respect it for beginning the vampire genre. This is the perfect book for me, because I love Horror, Mystery, and Thrillers. Read the original Dracula! You’ll love it!
